Triage and Treat

Funded by NHS Wales

What we offer

The Triage and Treat Service is offered in specific community pharmacies to help you if you have a low level injury. Some injuries can be treated successfully in the pharmacy rather than visiting a doctor or an A&E department.

This free NHS service is for local residents, visitors or holiday makers, especially when the GP practice is closed.

The types of injuries that can be treated in the pharmacy include:

  • Minor abrasions, superficial cuts or wounds
  • Eye complaints, such as sand in the eye
  • Removal of items from the skin such as a splinter or shell
  • Minor burns, including sunburn
  • Insect Bites, Jellyfish and Weever Fish stings

We may use dressings, butterfly stitches or tissue adhesive in the course of our treatment.

"What will happen?"

Once you have given your consent to be examined, the specially trained pharmacist, will 'triage' your injury. This means they will look at it and make a decision to whether we can 'treat' you here, or whether you need to seek treatment from another healthcare professional. If the injury is too serious to be treated in the pharmacy, you will be given advice about where to go. If we treat you, will will then inform your GP practice to let them know.
